Where Were You in 1996?
Last week I won tickets from Phoenix’s alt newspaper, The New Times, to a free Verve Pipe concert.
I love winning things. When my brain hears the word FREE all rational thought goes out the window and the free thing—no matter what it is—is judged to be AMAZING. Jack Daniels, who hosted the concert, must know this. Free was everywhere: free J.D. drinks, free food and, of course, free live music. These people are ingenious. I won’t be surprised if the next time I walk into a supermarket I have an uncontrollable desire to buy a big bottle of Jack Daniels for no reason at all.
The other day Chris was telling me about this Freakanomics-type study that involved chocolate, college students and the power of free stuff. It was actually pretty mind-blowing. (If you are interested in reading more about this study and other economic nuggets like this that have no bearing on real life but are fascinating nonetheless, Chris recommends that you read Predictably Irrational.)
Anyway, in anticipation of The Verve Pipe, I dug out the cd that brought them their fame: Villans. I can’t remember exactly how it came into my possession, but I hadn’t laid eyes on it since the Clinton administration, let alone listened to it. No matter! It’s laden with great little gems like “Cup of Tea”, “The Freshman”, and bunches of other songs that, magically, I knew all of the words to!
So, we had just hit the buffet and downed our second cocktail when they started to play. Ok...I admit I may have been swayed slightly by the free booze, but this was a great concert. I was singing along, dancing, really getting into it.
Then Chris made the astute observation that I seemed to be the only one who recognized any of the songs. True, the average age of the crowd was 22, so they would have been about ten years old when The Verve Pipe was at their peak. But at least Chris should know some of the songs, right? He looked at me, a J.D. haze in his eyes. “I think you were bigger Verve Pipe fan than me.” Ok. Really? Does anyone else remember them? They were big, they were huge! Back in ’96!
